Tom grew up on a farm near the small town of Mt. Union in southeast Iowa. Following his graduation from Iowa State, he attended the University of Michigan School of Law and obtained a juris doctorate degree in 1979. Tom was an attorney and partner at Locke Lord LLP in Dallas, Texas for 36 years, focusing on commercial litigation in state and federal courts and before arbitration panels. Tom retired from active practice in October 2020. Tom is active in his church and is a member of the board of directors of Dallas Academy, a K-12 school devoted to children with learning differences.

While at Iowa State Tom was a GSB Senator, a residence hall assistant, a member of the Institute of National Affairs, co-chair of Residence Hall Week, was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi, and was a member of Cardinal Key.

Tom has served as a member of the Iowa State LAS Dean’s Advisory Council since 2004, and he has been a member of the Order of the Knoll since 2005. Tom was a member of the Iowa State University Alumni Association Board of Directors from 2017-2021, and he was chair of the ISUAA Board of Directors from 2019-2020.

Tom and his wife, Lisa, have two sons: Robert, residing in Austin, Texas, and Michael, residing in Dallas.
