After graduating in English/Speech at ISU, he earned an MA with honors and ABD in English at the University of Iowa. His professional tenure spanned 32 years of full-time service as an ISU faculty member and administrator, two years as Presidential Chief of Staff for the University of Colorado System, and nine years of part-time service to ISU after returning to Iowa. He has been privileged to be involved in the decision to admit students without a declared major, to develop the learning communities initiative, to design the curriculum for the Emerging Leaders Academy, and to build an academic/professional culture for academic advisors and academic advising.
