Sandburg served as Vice President of Investments at FBL Financial Group, a publicly traded financial services company located in West Des Moines, Iowa, from 1998 until her retirement in 2008. From 1980 through 1998, Sandburg managed various fixed-income portfolios at FBL. She is a board member of the registered investment company Berthel Fisher Financial Services, Inc. of Marion, Iowa, and West Bancorporation, a bank holding company, and West Des Moines State Bank, an Iowa-chartered community bank, both located in West Des Moines, Iowa.
Throughout her career, Sandburg has served on numerous nonprofit boards including United Way of Central Iowa and The Chrysalis Foundation. She and her husband, Kent (Math 1970) live in Clive, Iowa, with a Wheaten Terrier and a gray tabby cat. Their hobbies of bicycling, gardening, and traveling are not always compatible but always enjoyable.
